The primary function of the bracing is to support and maintain the structural stability of the guitar's top. Bracing can also dramatically affect the way the guitar sounds, depending on how it's constructed and its arrangement (called the bracing pattern).

There are many different types of bracing patterns. The most common and enduring pattern used on steel-string acoustic guitars is called "X" bracing; so named for the two braces that form an "X" by crossing each other in the middle of the pattern.
